When responding to a scene, use the same amount of force as the suspects. Example: If the suspect is using a bat to hold a hostage, have a non-lethal weapon out. This would be either your taser or baton. An exception to this would be a sledge hammer, if one is seen at a scene, use of a Class A weapon is allowed. Another example: If the suspect is holding an AK-47, you are allowed to have your Class C out as well. If you do not have a Class C, use your highest class of lethal weapon.
Use of Force within Law Enforcement is a last resort utilized to save lives and preserve peace. Once an individual poses a lethal risk to life; Lethal Force is authorized.
Application of Force should be discussed with the Scene Commander before it becomes necessary so that all parties are aware of their rules of engagement. Unless the officer is given a free fire order by the Scene Commander, any shots must be authorized before being sent downrange.
